You are correct in that there is a newer model for deploying WordPress on Azure, one which I have covered extensively in the tutorial listed below. However, this presentation is mainly about the philosophy and concepts surrounding hosting WordPress, and in particular WordPress Networks, on Azure. Though the methodology has matured, the reasoning behind stays the same.
